Scottland arrive in South Africa for historic Toyota Cup showdown as Knowledge Musona reflects on Kaizer Chiefs homecoming
Scottland FC have arrived in South Africa ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated Toyota Cup clash against Betway Premiership giants Kaizer Chiefs, with the Zimbabwean champions preparing for one of the biggest international fixtures in the club’s history.
The match will be played on Sunday, 26 July, at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00 (CAT). Football fans across Zimbabwe and South Africa will be able to watch the encounter live on SABC 1, SABC+ and ZBC TV.
The fixture comes at a time when Scottland are enjoying an outstanding domestic campaign. After 24 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League matches, the Mabvuku-based side sit at the summit of the standings with 52 points, having won 15 matches, drawn seven and lost only two. They also boast the league’s most impressive statistics, having scored 39 goals, conceded just eight, and recorded a remarkable +31 goal difference.
The Toyota Cup presents another opportunity for Scottland to test themselves against one of Africa’s most recognised football institutions as Kaizer Chiefs continue preparations for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
For Scottland forward Knowledge Musona, however, the occasion carries special meaning beyond the football.
The veteran forward returns to face the club that launched his professional career after joining Kaizer Chiefs from Aces Youth SA in 2009. During two spells with Amakhosi, Musona scored 40 goals and registered 13 assists in 88 appearances, performances that earned him a move to Germany’s Bundesliga with Hoffenheim before spells in Belgium and Saudi Arabia.
Speaking during the Toyota Cup press conference, Musona admitted that returning to Kaizer Chiefs brings back special memories.
“It’s a great honour, it feels good to be back,” said Musona.
“This was my first home outside Zimbabwe and I’m so grateful to Kaizer Chiefs because they gave me the platform when I was young to showcase my talent.”
The Warriors forward added that the opportunity provided by Chiefs changed the direction of his career.
“From here I went abroad, so I’m very happy and very honoured to be back here and playing against the team that gave me the platform.”
Sunday’s encounter will therefore be an emotional reunion for one of Zimbabwe’s greatest football exports while also giving Scottland another opportunity to showcase the quality that has made them the pace-setters in the Zimbabwean top flight.
The Toyota Cup has steadily grown into one of Southern Africa’s premier pre-season fixtures, bringing together leading clubs from different leagues. For Scottland, the invitation represents recognition of the club’s rapid rise and continued progress on and off the field.
Scottland will also use the Toyota Cup as part of their preparations for another major challenge on the continental stage. The Zimbabwean champions are set to make their CAF Champions League debut later this year, making Sunday’s encounter against Kaizer Chiefs an important test as they continue building towards their first appearance in Africa’s premier club competition.
With the PSL leaders carrying the confidence of an impressive league campaign and Kaizer Chiefs eager to impress their supporters on home soil, all the ingredients are in place for a memorable contest between two ambitious clubs with rich football traditions.
