Joey Phuthi Begins New English Adventure After Sealing Whitby Town Move

Zimbabwe Warriors midfielder Joey Phuthi has found a new home in England after completing a move to Northern Premier League Premier Division side Whitby Town.

The 21-year-old midfielder joins the Seasiders after an impressive pre-season trial, where he managed to convince the club’s technical team with his performances, attitude and ability to operate in multiple positions.

Whitby Town confirmed that Phuthi’s pace, athleticism and versatility played a major role in earning him a contract ahead of the new season. The Zimbabwe international impressed both in training and during pre-season matches, showing qualities that the club believes will strengthen their squad.

Born in Harare, Phuthi’s football journey began after moving to England at a young age. He joined the academy system at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, where he developed through the club’s youth ranks before signing his first professional contract in August 2023.

His time at Sheffield Wednesday provided him with valuable experience in English football. The midfielder went on to make his senior debut for the club during the 2023/24 season against Coventry City and also featured in the FA Cup.

After his spell with Sheffield Wednesday came to an end, Phuthi continued his career with Eastbourne Borough before joining Cleethorpes Town in January 2026.

His performances during his time at Cleethorpes Town and his strong showing during the Whitby Town trial helped him secure his latest move as he continues to build his career in English football.

Phuthi is a versatile player who can play as a winger, wing-back and full-back, giving Whitby Town more options in their squad. His speed, energy and ability to adapt to different roles have been identified as some of his biggest strengths.

Whitby Town manager Lee Bullock was impressed by what he saw from the Zimbabwean during pre-season and believes he has the qualities needed to make an impact.

“Joey has done really well throughout pre-season and has earned this opportunity. He brings energy, pace and quality to the squad,” Bullock said.

For Phuthi, the move represents another important step in his development as he looks to gain more regular football and continue improving in the English football system.

The midfielder has already represented Zimbabwe at senior international level, making his Warriors debut in 2024 and earning two caps. His progress in England has kept him on the radar of national team selectors as he continues to develop.

With his new opportunity at Whitby Town, Phuthi will be aiming to make a strong impression, help his new club achieve its goals and continue opening doors for more success in his football career.

The move also adds to the growing number of Zimbabwean players building careers abroad, with Phuthi hoping to become another success story from the country’s football talent pool.
