Zimbabwe Ready For Australia ODI Test With Blend Of Experience And Youth

Zimbabwe have assembled a balanced 15-man squad for their three-match ODI series against Australia, with experienced campaigners returning to the fold alongside a number of younger players looking to make their mark on the international stage.

The Chevrons will host Australia at Harare Sports Club on 15, 18 and 20 September, with all three matches scheduled to begin at 9:30am local time.

Sikandar Raza will captain the side as regular skipper Richard Ngarava continues his recovery from a lower-back injury. Ngarava and Tanaka Chivanga, who is recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, have both been ruled out of the series.

Wicketkeeper-batter Clive Madande is also unavailable, meaning Zimbabwe have made three changes from the squad that defeated Bangladesh in their most recent ODI assignment in Harare in July.

Among the biggest boosts for the hosts is the return of Brendan Taylor and Graeme Cremer. Their experience, alongside Raza and Craig Ervine, gives Zimbabwe a strong senior presence as they prepare for the challenge of facing Australia.

The squad also contains several players who represent the next generation of Zimbabwean cricket. Brian Bennett, Ben Curran and Innocent Kaia are among the batting options, while Tadiwanashe Marumani will also contribute with the gloves.

Blessing Muzarabani will spearhead the pace attack, supported by Brad Evans, Newman Nyamhuri and Ernest Masuku. In the spin department, Cremer and Wellington Masakadza provide specialist options, with Ryan Burl and Wessly Madhevere adding further all-round ability.

Taylor and Marumani will share the wicketkeeping responsibilities, giving the selectors flexibility when deciding their combinations across the three matches.

Australia’s arrival in Zimbabwe is significant, as the visitors are returning for an ODI series in the country for the first time in more than a decade.

The last ODI meetings between the two sides on Zimbabwean soil came during a triangular series in August and September 2014, when South Africa also competed.

The upcoming series will therefore provide Zimbabwe with a valuable opportunity to test themselves against one of the strongest teams in world cricket on home soil.

It also forms part of the Chevrons’ preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which Zimbabwe will co-host with South Africa and Namibia.

With a combination of established international figures and emerging talent, Zimbabwe will hope to use the three matches to build confidence, assess their options and gain valuable experience ahead of the global tournament.
