Zimbabwe prepare for major UAE cricket tour

Zimbabwe are set for a busy period of international cricket after Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed an extensive multi-format tour of the United Arab Emirates involving Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The Chevrons will compete in an ODI tri-series against hosts Afghanistan and Bangladesh before facing Afghanistan in three T20Is and two Test matches. The programme will run from October into November, giving Zimbabwe an opportunity to compete across all three formats.

The ODI tri-series will begin on 17 October when Zimbabwe take on Bangladesh in the opening match. Zimbabwe will then face Afghanistan on 19 October, while Afghanistan and Bangladesh will meet in the final round-robin fixture on 21 October.

The top two teams after the round-robin stage will qualify for the final, which is scheduled for 23 October.

The competition will provide Zimbabwe with important ODI cricket against two quality opponents. With qualification for the final at stake, the Chevrons will need consistent performances throughout the round-robin stage.

Zimbabwe will then turn their attention to T20 cricket, with Afghanistan their opponents in a three-match series.

The first T20I is scheduled for 27 October, followed by the second match on 29 October. The series will conclude on 1 November.

The T20I matches will give Zimbabwe another opportunity to test their squad in the shortest format while competing against an Afghanistan side that has developed into a strong force in international white-ball cricket.

The biggest part of the tour will come afterwards when Zimbabwe and Afghanistan meet in a two-Test series.

The first Test will be played from 5 to 9 November, with the second scheduled for 13 to 17 November.

The Test matches are particularly valuable for Zimbabwe as the national team continues to seek more regular opportunities in the longest format. The two fixtures will provide players with an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to perform over several days and in different conditions.

Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni welcomed the confirmation of the programme, describing the tour as an important opportunity for the national team.

Makoni highlighted the quality of opposition in the ODI tri-series and the importance of the two Tests as Zimbabwe continue their efforts to secure more regular Test cricket.

He also thanked the Afghanistan Cricket Board for hosting the programme and the Bangladesh Cricket Board for its cooperation.

Afghanistan Cricket Board Chief Executive Officer Naseeb Khan also welcomed the upcoming assignments, saying the matches would give Afghanistan valuable competitive opportunities against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh across different formats.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board said it remains committed to providing its national team with regular, high-quality international cricket.

Before Zimbabwe’s arrival in the UAE, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will face each other in a one-off Test from 9 to 13 October.

For Zimbabwe, the UAE tour will be an important test of adaptability. Moving between ODI, T20I and Test cricket will require players to adjust their approach, tactics and preparation from one format to another.

The extensive schedule should also provide opportunities for Zimbabwe to assess squad depth and identify players capable of contributing across different formats.

The tour will start with the ODI tri-series on 17 October and conclude with the second Test on 17 November, giving Zimbabwe several weeks of high-level international cricket.

With Afghanistan and Bangladesh providing the opposition, the Chevrons will have a demanding schedule ahead, but one that could prove valuable as Zimbabwe continue to strengthen their national team across all three formats.
