Dynamos’ unbeaten run ends as Chicken Inn, Ngezi Platinum and Highlanders claim crucial wins

Dynamos’ impressive 15-match unbeaten run in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League came to an end on Sunday after the Glamour Boys suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chicken Inn at Rufaro Stadium in a dramatic Matchday 27 encounter.

The defeat was Dynamos’ first league loss since May, when they were beaten by traditional rivals CAPS United, bringing an impressive sequence of results to a halt. It also ended new coach Aristica Cioaba’s unbeaten league start with the Harare giants.

Chicken Inn secured the victory through Thulani Joseph, whose spectacular long-range effort in the 72nd minute proved to be the decisive moment of the contest. Joseph spotted Dynamos goalkeeper NFOR off his line and produced an outstanding strike to give the Gamecocks the lead.

The visitors then showed great defensive discipline to protect their advantage during the closing stages, with goalkeeper Donovan making an important save as Dynamos pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

The result was particularly significant for Chicken Inn, who completed a league double over Dynamos after winning the first-round meeting 2-1.

The three points lifted the Gamecocks from 10th to ninth position on the league table, taking their tally to 37 points after 27 matches. The victory also provided a major boost to their hopes of finishing the season strongly.

For Joseph, the match carried an additional reward as he was named the LuckyBets Player of the Match. It was his first such award since the introduction of the initiative, making his match-winning performance even more memorable.

While Dynamos suffered a setback, Ngezi Platinum Stars used the weekend to strengthen their position in the title race after recording a 2-0 away victory over Manica Diamonds at Sakubva Stadium.

Ngezi took the lead in the 13th minute when Madanhanga delivered a chipped cross into the box and Tinashe Mavhudzi climbed highest to head the ball into an empty net.

The goal marked Mavhudzi’s first of the season and gave the visitors an early advantage as they looked to secure maximum points on the road.

Manica Diamonds remained in the contest for much of the match, but Ngezi continued to search for a second goal to put the result beyond doubt.

That second goal eventually arrived in the 89th minute when Marvelous Mukumba found the back of the net with a header following Katumba’s effort, which had rebounded off the crossbar.

Mukumba’s strike was his fifth goal of the season and completed a valuable 2-0 victory for the Platinum Boys.

Midfielder Brooklyn Katumba was named the LuckyBets Player of the Match after his influential performance. The recognition was especially significant for Katumba as it was his first LuckyBets Player of the Match award since the initiative was introduced.

Katumba also thanked LuckyBets for the recognition following the match.

The victory kept Ngezi Platinum Stars firmly involved in the PSL title race and moved them into third position, giving them another important boost as the battle at the top of the table intensifies.

At Barbourfields Stadium, Highlanders also returned to winning ways with a convincing 2-0 victory over Herentals College FC.

Bosso went into the break level at 0-0 despite creating several opportunities during an entertaining first half. Highlanders continued pushing after the restart and eventually broke the deadlock through substitute Marvin Sibanda.

Sibanda was introduced at half-time and made an immediate impact, scoring in the 59th minute after Andrew Mbeba delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area.

The midfielder then completed his brace in the 88th minute, giving Highlanders a comfortable two-goal advantage and securing all three points for the home side.

Sibanda was subsequently named the LuckyBets Player of the Match, capping a remarkable individual afternoon.

His award was also his first LuckyBets Player of the Match recognition since the introduction of the accolade. Coming off the bench to score twice and help Highlanders to victory made the achievement even more special.

The result ended Highlanders’ three-match winless run and gave Bosso a much-needed victory in front of their home supporters.

Matchday 27 therefore produced important developments at both ends of the leading pack, with Dynamos losing ground while Chicken Inn, Ngezi Platinum Stars and Highlanders all secured valuable victories.

For Dynamos, the focus will now turn to rebuilding after the end of their long unbeaten run. The Glamour Boys remain among the leading teams, but the defeat serves as a reminder that the PSL title race remains unpredictable.

Chicken Inn, meanwhile, will take enormous confidence from their victory at Rufaro. Completing a league double over Dynamos, moving up to ninth with 37 points and ending the hosts’ 15-match unbeaten run made it a particularly valuable afternoon for the Gamecocks.

Ngezi Platinum Stars also remain firmly in the championship conversation after their professional away victory at Sakubva, while Highlanders will hope their win over Herentals can provide the momentum needed for the remainder of the campaign.

With the season continuing to move towards Matchday 34, every point is becoming increasingly valuable, and Matchday 27 has already reshaped the picture at the top of the Castle Lager PSL.
