Zimbabwe Women Fall to India Despite Gwanzura’s Three-Wicket Haul

Zimbabwe’s Lady Chevrons suffered a four-wicket defeat against India in the opening T20 International in Raipur on Friday, despite Nyasha Gwanzura taking three wickets to put the hosts under early pressure.

Batting first, Zimbabwe posted 114/5 in their 20 overs, with Sharne Mayers top-scoring with an unbeaten 43 off 33 balls, while Kelis Ndhlovu contributed 42.

Zimbabwe lost opener Beloved Biza for a duck in the first over but recovered through a 53-run partnership between Ndhlovu and Modester Mupachikwa. Ndhlovu’s 42 provided the foundation for the innings before Arundhati Reddy bowled her, while Shree Charani dismissed Mupachikwa.

Mayers helped Zimbabwe finish strongly, remaining unbeaten as the visitors reached 114/5. However, India’s Nandani Sharma claimed two wickets for 11 runs, including two dismissals in the final over.

India’s chase got off to a difficult start as Gwanzura ripped through the top order. She dismissed captain Smriti Mandhana and Anushka Sharma in the same over before taking a return catch to remove Shafali Verma. Michelle Mavunga also dismissed Harmanpreet Kaur, leaving India struggling at 19/4.

Gwanzura finished with figures of 3/18, giving Zimbabwe a strong opportunity to defend their total.

However, Deepti Sharma and debutant Niki Prasad turned the match around with an 82-run fifth-wicket partnership. Deepti scored 49 off 37 deliveries, narrowly missing out on a half-century, while Prasad remained unbeaten on 39 from 35 balls.

Their partnership steadied the innings and brought India within reach of victory. Deepti fell with India on 110, but Prasad completed the chase with a boundary as the hosts reached 116/6 in 15.4 overs to win by four wickets.

The match marked the first international meeting between the two sides in women’s cricket and Mandhana’s first game as India’s full-time captain.

Zimbabwe will now look to bounce back when the teams meet again in the second T20I in Raipur on Sunday.
