Team Zimbabwe Tops SACA Championships Medal Table After Outstanding Day One Performance

Team Zimbabwe made a powerful statement on the opening day of the Southern Africa Championships (SACA), finishing Day One at the top of the medal standings after collecting an impressive haul of nine medals, including five gold and three silver medals.
The medal rush began with Tanatswa Nyamukondiwa, who sprinted to victory in the Under-18 Boys’ 100m final to secure Zimbabwe’s first gold medal of the competition.
Zimbabwe’s dominance continued in the field events where Panashe Mutenure led a memorable one-two finish in the Under-20 Men’s Long Jump. Mutenure claimed gold with a jump of 7.28m, while Takunda Mutizwa earned silver after recording 7.08m.
Martha Chipuriro added another podium finish for Zimbabwe after producing a strong performance to win silver in the Under-20 Women’s 1500m race.
On the track, Tanatswa Chakonda also impressed, claiming silver in the Under-18 Boys’ 110m hurdles with a time of 14.07 seconds.
The 400m events brought further success for Team Zimbabwe. Anesu Nyahuma stormed to gold in the Under-20 Women’s 400m, crossing the finish line in 55.79 seconds, while Nenyasha Chihora secured silver in the Under-20 Men’s 400m.
One of the highlights of the day came in the Under-20 Men’s 100m final, where Trey Chimunya produced a brilliant run to win gold in a time of 10.36 seconds. His performance not only earned him top spot on the podium but also secured qualification for the upcoming World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Zimbabwe capped a remarkable opening day by winning gold in the Under-20 Mixed 4x400m Relay. The quartet of Nataly Shoko, Emmanuel Uriga, Anesu Nyahuma and Nenyasha Chihora combined brilliantly to deliver another memorable victory for the nation.
With five gold medals and nine medals overall, Team Zimbabwe ended Day One proudly sitting at the summit of the championship standings and carrying significant momentum into the second day of competition.
Attention now shifts to Day Two, where Zimbabwean athletes will compete in the 200m races, 400m hurdles and several field events as they aim to continue their impressive medal-winning form.
