Katsande Makes Instant Impact as Grand Legacy Boss to Clinch Coach of the Month Award

Willard Katsande has been named the Eastern Region Soccer League Coach of the Month for May after an outstanding debut month in charge of Murehwa-based side Grand Legacy, where he has quickly established himself as one of the rising coaching figures in Zimbabwe’s domestic football scene.
The former Zimbabwean international midfielder, widely known for his successful playing career at Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa, has transitioned into coaching with the same discipline, leadership, and fighting spirit that defined him on the pitch.
Katsande is remembered as a tough and intelligent midfielder during his playing days, where he spent a long and successful spell at Kaizer Chiefs after joining from Ajax Cape Town, earning respect for his consistency, work rate, and leadership qualities over nearly a decade at the club.
At international level, Katsande represented the Zimbabwe national team with pride and even captained the Warriors at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals, further cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most dependable midfielders of his generation. His experience at the highest level of African football has now become a key foundation in his coaching journey.
After hanging up his boots following a brief spell at Sekhukhune United in South Africa, Katsande began his coaching path, gaining early experience in domestic football with Rangers FC before making a major step forward in May 2026 when he joined Grand Legacy, a club competing in the Eastern Region Soccer League.
Rangers FC, his former side, are based in the Northern Region Soccer League, where Katsande took his first steps into coaching before taking on the new challenge in Murehwa. His move to Grand Legacy has already proven to be a turning point, with immediate impact being seen at the club.
In his debut month at Grand Legacy, Katsande guided the team through a remarkable run of fixtures, collecting four wins and one draw. This unbeaten stretch demonstrated his ability to quickly organise a squad, improve structure, and build confidence within the team.
Among the standout performances under his leadership was a dominant 4-0 victory over Great Zimbabwe University FC, a match that showcased Grand Legacy’s attacking strength and tactical discipline. The team also secured important narrow wins, including a 1-0 home victory over FC Wangu Mazodze and a 1-0 away win against Chivhu FC, highlighting their ability to manage tight encounters and secure maximum points under pressure.
A 0-0 draw away to Yadah FC further demonstrated defensive resilience, as Grand Legacy held firm in a physically demanding encounter to ensure they avoided defeat on the road. Across all five matches, the team showed improved organisation, balance, and game control, which directly contributed to Katsande’s recognition as Coach of the Month.
His award is made even more impressive by the fact that it came during his very first month in charge, underlining the speed of his impact and the immediate transformation in team performance. Players have responded well to his leadership, with noticeable improvements in discipline, structure, and game management.
The results have also pushed Grand Legacy into a strong position in the Eastern Region Soccer League standings. After 13 matches played, the Murehwa-based side currently sits comfortably inside the top five, marking a significant achievement and reflecting the progress made under Katsande’s guidance.
For a team aiming to build consistency and compete at the top end of the table, the arrival of Katsande has brought renewed belief and direction. His experience as a former top-level player has added authority to his coaching approach, while his leadership style has helped stabilise performances during a crucial stage of the season.
Winning Coach of the Month in his debut month not only highlights the quality of results achieved but also signals the beginning of what could be a promising coaching career for Katsande. From a respected midfielder at Kaizer Chiefs and Zimbabwe international captain to an emerging coach making early waves in domestic football, his journey continues to evolve.
With Grand Legacy now sitting in the top five and showing steady improvement, attention will turn to whether Katsande can maintain this momentum and build a sustained challenge as the season progresses. For now, his start could hardly have been better, marking him out as one of the standout coaching stories in the Eastern Region Soccer League.
