Zimbabwe-eligible Tino Goremusandu signs first professional contract with Blackburn Rovers

Zimbabwe-eligible defender Tino Goremusandu has taken a major step in his football career after signing his first professional contract with English Championship club Blackburn Rovers.

The 18-year-old left-back has agreed to a two-year deal at Ewood Park, with Blackburn holding the option to extend the contract by a further year after he impressed during a trial spell with the club’s Under-21 side towards the end of last season.

The move comes after Goremusandu departed Southampton and successfully earned the opportunity to continue his development at Blackburn, a club renowned for giving young players a pathway into senior football.

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Goremusandu described the occasion as one of the proudest moments of his life.

“It’s a proud moment for me and my family,” he said.

The talented defender revealed that his successful trial convinced both himself and the club that Blackburn was the right place to continue his development.

“I came on trial here towards the end of last season and did well, so I’m grateful to sign a professional contract here. I enjoyed the setup here when I first came and I wanted to make a statement. It’s a step in the right direction and I want to kick on now.”

During his trial spell, Goremusandu featured for Blackburn Rovers Under-21s in the Premier League Cup semi-finals, performances that impressed the coaching staff and ultimately earned him a professional contract.

The youngster also highlighted Blackburn’s commitment to developing academy players as one of the biggest reasons behind his decision to join the club.

“When Rovers said they wanted me on trial, it was a no-brainer when you look at the setup and the pathway towards the first team.”

Looking ahead to the new campaign, Goremusandu has set ambitious targets as he aims to force his way into the senior setup.

“This season, I want to kick on with the Under-21s, get as many minutes as I can, get goals and assists. The ultimate goal is to train with the first team if I impress with the Under-21s.”

The defender’s rise has been remarkable. Just three years ago, he was playing Sunday league football before progressing through the English football system to earn his first professional contract.

“It’s something I have been working towards since I was little. It feels very special. Three years ago, I was playing Sunday league, so to get a professional contract is a massive achievement.”

Eligible to represent Zimbabwe at international level, Goremusandu is regarded as another exciting prospect for the Warriors’ future. His progress in one of England’s most competitive football environments will undoubtedly be closely monitored by Zimbabwean football supporters.

For Blackburn Rovers, the signing adds another promising young player to a development system that has consistently produced first-team talent.

For Goremusandu, the immediate focus will be on establishing himself in the Under-21 squad, continuing his development and taking the next step towards Championship football. If his progress continues, the teenager could soon become another Zimbabwe-eligible player making his mark in English professional football.
