Mighty Warriors Build Momentum For Crucial Malawi Olympic Qualifier

Zimbabwe’s Mighty Warriors are intensifying preparations for a crucial two-legged Olympic qualifier against Malawi as they begin their push for a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Coach Stella Gotal is using the training camp to bring together players from different clubs and football backgrounds, with the Croatian coach focused on developing a team capable of competing as one unit.
The squad includes players who have been exposed to different coaching methods and football systems, making team chemistry one of the key areas of focus during the preparations.
Gotal said the early stages of camp had presented a challenge as the players adjusted to one another, but the technical team has been working to establish a clear identity for the Mighty Warriors.
The coach is particularly focused on how Zimbabwe play when they have possession, how they organise themselves without the ball and how quickly they transition between attack and defence.
With the opening match against Malawi approaching, the work done during camp will now be put to the test.
Zimbabwe will travel to Bingu Stadium for the first leg on Friday, where they will face the Scorchers before returning home for the decisive second leg at the National Sports Stadium four days later.
The two matches represent an important opportunity for the Mighty Warriors as they look to move closer to another appearance at the Olympic Games.
Zimbabwe made history by qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming the first Zimbabwean women’s football team to reach the Games. The current squad will now hope to create another memorable chapter by navigating the Olympic qualifying campaign successfully.
For Gotal, building a strong collective understanding has been central to the preparations. The coach wants her players to understand not only their individual roles but also how those responsibilities connect with those of their teammates.
The limited time before the Malawi tie makes that process even more important. Zimbabwe will need to combine tactical discipline with confidence and consistency when they face the Scorchers.
The Mighty Warriors will therefore enter Friday’s first leg knowing that a positive result in Malawi could provide an important foundation before the return match in Harare.
The focus is now firmly on Malawi, with Zimbabwe hoping that the work completed during camp will translate into a strong performance when their Olympic qualification journey gets underway.
