Zimbabwe reach FNB T20I Tri-Series final

Zimbabwe have secured their place in the FNB T20I Tri-Series final after South Africa ended Namibia’s hopes with an 11-run victory in Windhoek on Friday.

The Chevrons will now face South Africa in Sunday’s final, earning another opportunity to take on the Proteas after a mixed league campaign that saw Zimbabwe record two wins and two defeats.

Zimbabwe’s qualification was made possible by their crucial five-wicket victory over Namibia on Thursday. The Chevrons successfully chased down a target of 157, reaching 159 for five in 18.1 overs.

Innocent Kaia was the star of that victory, producing an outstanding 72 from 42 balls. His innings included eight fours and three sixes and provided the foundation for Zimbabwe’s successful chase.

Kaia’s aggressive batting kept Zimbabwe ahead of the required run rate for much of the innings, and his contribution earned him the Player of the Match award.

The victory over Namibia left Zimbabwe waiting for the result of Friday’s second meeting between the hosts and South Africa, as the outcome would determine which teams progressed to the final.

South Africa eventually delivered the result Zimbabwe needed, posting 228 for four before Namibia finished on 217 for three from their 20 overs.

The 11-run victory brought Namibia’s campaign to an end and confirmed Zimbabwe’s place in the final alongside South Africa.

The Chevrons had endured a challenging league phase, losing twice to South Africa while recording two victories over Namibia. Their latest win against the hosts therefore proved decisive in keeping their campaign alive.

Zimbabwe will now have a chance to end the tournament with silverware when they meet South Africa on Sunday.

The final also presents the Chevrons with an opportunity to respond after their 43-run defeat to the Proteas in their most recent meeting on Tuesday.

South Africa posted 185 for seven in that match before Zimbabwe were dismissed for 142. The Chevrons will now have another chance to compete against the Proteas with the tri-series title at stake.

The road to the final has not been straightforward for Zimbabwe, but their important victory over Namibia and South Africa’s result on Friday have ensured that they remain in contention for the trophy.

Sunday’s final will bring the two strongest remaining sides together, with Zimbabwe looking to produce their best performance of the tournament and finish their campaign on a high.
