Zimbabwe Women Fall 14 Runs Short As South Africa Complete 5-0 Sweep

Zimbabwe Women were left to rue a late collapse after a promising chase ended in defeat against South Africa in the fifth and final T20I in Bulawayo on September 19, 2026.

The hosts needed 165 for victory after South Africa posted 164 for six, and for much of the chase Zimbabwe looked capable of ending the series on a high.

At 102 for two, Zimbabwe were firmly in the contest. Kelis Ndhlovu and Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano had combined for an important 81-run partnership, putting the hosts in a strong position with plenty of batting still available.

Mugeri-Tiripano scored 33 before Caitlin Wyngaard finally broke the partnership in the 14th over. That wicket triggered a dramatic change in the game as South Africa’s bowlers began to take control.

Ayanda Hlubi then produced a crucial double strike, dismissing Ndhlovu for a team-high 38 before removing Beloved Biza without scoring. Zimbabwe struggled to recover from those setbacks.

Nthabiseng Nini added further pressure with three wickets of her own, finishing alongside Hlubi as South Africa’s leading wicket-takers. Zimbabwe eventually closed on 150 for eight, finishing 14 runs short of the target.

The chase had begun with Zimbabwe losing Nyasha Gwanzura and Lorraine Pemhiwa early. Gwanzura had made an aggressive start with two fours and a six before Hlubi trapped her lbw, while Nini accounted for Pemhiwa for two.

Ndhlovu and Mugeri-Tiripano then steadied the innings and gave Zimbabwe genuine hope of victory. Their partnership kept the required rate within reach and placed the hosts in control by the end of the 10th over.

South Africa responded with disciplined bowling before Wyngaard and Hlubi turned the contest around.

Earlier, South Africa also had to recover from a difficult period with the bat. Miane Smit and Faye Tunnicliffe made a steady start before Michelle Mavunga struck in the fourth over.

Karabo Meso and captain Laura Wolvaardt were dismissed for single figures, but Kayla Reyneke and Anneke Bosch rebuilt the innings with a 75-run partnership.

Reyneke finished unbeaten on 34 from 31 balls, while Bosch contributed 33 to help South Africa reach 164 for six.

Mavunga was Zimbabwe’s standout bowler, taking three wickets for 46 runs and claiming two wickets in the final over.

Zimbabwe’s late collapse ultimately proved decisive, with the hosts losing six wickets for 47 runs after reaching 102 for two.

The 14-run defeat completed a 5-0 series sweep for South Africa, leaving Zimbabwe without a victory across the five-match T20I series despite showing periods of strong competition.
