Sables’ Nations Cup campaign ends with hope despite winless run
The Zimbabwe Sables finished their World Rugby Nations Cup campaign with their heads held high after showing determination and improvement despite ending the tournament without a victory.
Zimbabwe’s final match saw them go down 23-19 against Canada in Winnipeg, but the performance once again demonstrated the team’s fighting qualities and ability to compete against stronger opposition.
The Sables endured a difficult opening half as Canada took control of the contest, building a 13-0 advantage before halftime. The hosts continued their momentum after the restart, adding another try to increase the pressure on Zimbabwe.
However, Zimbabwe refused to surrender. The Sables responded strongly through Liam Larkan, who scored their first try of the match in the 56th minute, with Ian Prior converting to reduce the gap.
Canada managed to create more breathing space with another try from Calixto Martinez, but Zimbabwe kept pushing. Cleopas Kundiona crossed over in the 70th minute, and Prior’s conversion brought the Sables closer.
A late try from Dion Khumalo created a tense closing period, but Canada held firm to secure the win.
Despite the disappointing result, Zimbabwe’s campaign provided important lessons and valuable experience. Competing against international teams gave the Sables an opportunity to measure themselves against quality opponents and continue developing as a unit.
The tournament also highlighted the team’s resilience, with Zimbabwe repeatedly showing that they can stay competitive even when facing difficult situations.
As preparations continue for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, the Sables will use the lessons from the Nations Cup to improve and strengthen their squad.
