Do You Know Nqobile Magwizi? The Man Leading Zimbabwe Football’s New Era

When the name Nqobile Magwizi is mentioned in Zimbabwean football circles today, it represents a new chapter in the country’s football journey — a chapter built around rebuilding, professionalism, commercialisation and restoring Zimbabwe’s place within regional and international football structures.
Born on 22 January 1979, Nqobile Magwizi is a Zimbabwean businessman and football administrator who became the President of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) in January 2025.
His arrival at the top of Zimbabwe football came at a critical moment. The country was coming out of a difficult period in football governance after FIFA placed ZIFA under a Normalisation Committee from late 2022 due to governance concerns.
Magwizi’s election marked the end of that transition period and the beginning of a new administration. At the ZIFA electoral assembly held in Harare on 25 January 2025, he won the presidency after receiving the majority of votes from football stakeholders.
His appointment attracted attention because he came into football leadership from a strong business and corporate background rather than from a playing career. His supporters viewed his experience in finance, marketing and business development as a possible advantage in helping transform football administration in Zimbabwe.
Before entering football leadership, Magwizi had already established himself in the business world.
He is the co-founder and non-executive chairman of Tatu Advertising, a Zimbabwean marketing and communications company established in 2004.
The company was founded on 5 October 2004 by Magwizi together with Carl Joshua Ncube and Chido Madzivanyika. The name “Tatu” comes from the Shona word meaning “three”, representing the three founders.
Over the years, Tatu Advertising grew into a recognised marketing agency, working with hundreds of brands and becoming one of Zimbabwe’s notable communication companies. The company celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024, marking two decades of business growth.
Apart from advertising, Magwizi also ventured into property and infrastructure development.
He founded NC and Banat Strategic Partners, a property and infrastructure advisory firm involved in various national projects.
The company has been linked with projects such as the refurbishment of Rufaro Stadium, rehabilitation works on the Harare-Beitbridge Road and the installation of bucket seats at the National Sports Stadium as part of renovation efforts.
Magwizi’s educational background has also played an important role in shaping his career.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Marketing Management from the University of South Africa (UNISA). He also obtained a certificate in Property Development and Investment from the University of Cape Town.
He later completed an MSc in International Banking and Finance at the University of Salford in the United Kingdom and a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Development Finance from Stellenbosch University in South Africa. He is also a qualified Chartered Accountant through ACCA.
Although he was known mainly as a businessman, Magwizi’s involvement in football administration started years before becoming ZIFA president.
He served as a board member of Banket Football Club from 2017, gaining experience in football management at club level.
In 2022, he was appointed to the board of the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), Zimbabwe’s sports regulatory body.
One of his biggest contributions to Zimbabwe football before becoming ZIFA president was helping create commercial partnerships for local clubs.
Magwizi played a role in facilitating the sponsorship partnership between Sakunda Holdings and Zimbabwe’s two biggest football clubs, Highlanders and Dynamos.
The sponsorship package, valued at millions of dollars, provided financial support to the two giants and was aimed at improving club operations, player development and long-term sustainability. The deal began in 2021 and was renewed in 2024.
After taking over at ZIFA, Magwizi outlined a vision focused on making the association more professional, financially stable and attractive to partners.
He spoke about the importance of creating new revenue streams, improving football infrastructure, developing players and rebuilding confidence among football stakeholders.
One of his first major priorities was preparing the Zimbabwe Warriors for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.
Magwizi described the AFCON campaign as an important assignment and an opportunity for Zimbabwe to showcase itself on the continental stage.
Zimbabwe were drawn in a group that included Egypt, South Africa and Angola. Although the Warriors exited the tournament at the group stage, the competition was viewed as part of the rebuilding process for the national team.
Magwizi’s leadership also gained international recognition.
In October 2025, he was appointed to the FIFA Commercial and Marketing Advisory Committee, a four-year position running from 2025 to 2029.
The committee advises FIFA on commercial and marketing strategies, giving Zimbabwe representation within global football structures.
In May 2026, Magwizi achieved another major milestone when he was elected into the COSAFA Executive Committee during the regional body’s elective Annual General Meeting held in Harare.
His election placed him among Southern Africa’s football decision-makers for the 2026–2029 term.
The COSAFA appointment was seen as another sign of Zimbabwe’s renewed involvement in regional football after years of challenges.
Following his election, Magwizi said the appointment represented another step in Zimbabwe’s journey of re-engagement, rebuilding and restoration within the football family.
His leadership journey has not been without challenges and debate. Like any football administrator, his decisions will continue to face scrutiny from supporters and stakeholders who expect improvements in domestic football, national teams and administration.
However, his supporters believe his background in business, finance and partnerships can help Zimbabwe football move towards a more sustainable future.
From the boardrooms of business to the football offices of ZIFA, Nqobile Magwizi now carries one of the biggest responsibilities in Zimbabwean sport — helping rebuild the game, restore pride and create a stronger future for generations of footballers and supporters.
