FC Platinum midfielder Garikai Dematsika is fast emerging as one of the most closely watched young players in Zimbabwean football, with his performances this season drawing attention from fans, coaches, former internationals, and growing social media debate about a possible Zimbabwe national team call-up.

Still early in his professional journey, Dematsika is already carrying a powerful football identity — not only as a rising midfielder at one of Zimbabwe’s biggest clubs, but also as the son of former Black Rhinos and Zimbabwe football figure Lloyd Dematsika, a name that already carries history in local football circles.

But despite that strong surname, Garikai is determined to build his own legacy.

Born in Budiriro 1 and raised in Mufakose, Dematsika’s football story began in the heart of Harare’s football culture, where street football, school competitions, and community games shaped his early development.

“I am Garikai Dematsika. I was born in Budiriro 1, but I grew up in Mufakose. That is where my football journey started. We used to play at primary school, secondary school, and in junior leagues and academies,” he explained.

From those early days, football was never just a game — it was part of his identity.

“What inspired me is that football is in my family. My father played football and even represented the national team. So growing up, football was always around me. It became something natural.”

That football background has placed expectations on him, but also motivation — a drive to match and possibly exceed the legacy of his father.

Before joining FC Platinum, Dematsika’s journey took him through several Zimbabwean clubs where he gradually built experience, discipline, and exposure to top-flight football.

“The teams I played for before FC Platinum are Black Rhinos, Herentals, Manica Diamonds, and GreenFuel.”

However, his foundation was shaped long before professional contracts — in Mufakose, a community known for producing talented footballers and competitive street football environments.

“Mufakose is a football community. We grew up watching players like Khama Billiat, Blessing Moyo, Tafadzwa Kutinyu, Dominic Chungwa, and Talent Chawapiwa. These are the players who inspired us. We wanted to reach their level and even go beyond.”

Despite his rise, Dematsika is open about the difficulties he has faced on his journey, challenges that almost ended his career before it fully began.

“There are many challenges, especially from where we come from. It is not easy to get a club that believes in you. You struggle with training schedules, travelling, injuries, and sometimes even motivation. At one point I even thought of quitting football, but I realised football is in my heart. I had to keep going.”

Now at FC Platinum, Dematsika has become a regular feature in the squad, showing steady growth, tactical awareness, and improving confidence in midfield. However, he remains humble about his performances this season.

“So far at FC Platinum, I would say my performances are average. I am still trying to improve as an individual and as a team player. Every day I work to get better.”

Every match, he says, is another step in development rather than a finished statement.

“Every game has its own challenges. I just try to contribute whenever I get the chance.”

One of the biggest talking points around Dematsika this season has been increasing discussion around a possible Zimbabwe national team (Warriors) call-up.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, particularly after last month when Warriors midfielder Marshall Munetsi publicly praised his display following a standout match performance.

Munetsi, who was in national team camp for the Unity Cup in England, watched Dematsika’s match stream alongside teammates and Warriors assistant coach Takesure Chiragwi. His reaction added weight to the growing conversation around the young midfielder.

The performance sparked debate on social media, with many fans suggesting Dematsika is edging closer to a national team call-up based on his consistency and potential.

For the player himself, however, the focus remains grounded.

“Being called to the national team is every player’s dream. It is also my dream. My father played for the national team, so I also want to follow in his footsteps.”

“To get there, I must perform well for my club week in and week out. That is the only way you earn a call-up.”

Dematsika also opened up about FC Platinum’s season, admitting that while the team is improving, there is still work to be done to reach their standards.

“As a team, we know we are not yet where we want to be. We are trying to improve every day. Our standards are high, so we must keep pushing until we get there.”

Despite challenges, he believes the squad is moving in the right direction.

“We believe things will change if we continue working hard and staying focused.”

As his performances attract attention, talk of possible transfers has begun to circulate, but Dematsika remains focused on development rather than speculation.

“I do not focus too much on transfers. My main focus is improving as a player and helping my team. If an opportunity comes, I will consider it then.”

However, he is clear about his long-term dream — playing at the highest level of world football.

“My dream is to play in the English Premier League. That is the level I want to reach. I want to show that Zimbabwe produces quality players.”

Dematsika says FC Platinum has played a key role in his development, describing the club as a second home.

“FC Platinum means a lot to me. They welcomed me well and I feel at home here. The support from coaches, management, and teammates motivates me every day.”

He also acknowledged the importance of supporters in driving the team forward.

“The fans are very important. They give us strength in every match. Whether we win or lose, they continue to support us.”

To the FC Platinum supporters, Dematsika delivered a heartfelt message of gratitude.

“I want to thank the fans for their support. We really appreciate them. We ask them to continue standing with us and believing in the team. We play for them.”

Away from football, Dematsika prefers a quiet, grounded lifestyle focused on recovery and family.

“When I am not playing football, I rest at home, listen to gospel music, and spend time with my family. That is where I get strength and peace.”

In difficult moments, he draws strength from his background and faith.

“I always remember where I come from. It was not easy to reach this level. I believe in God, and I keep pushing no matter what.”

Finally, he left a powerful message for young footballers.

“Work hard and believe in yourself. It is not easy, but every journey is different. Do not give up. Stay strong mentally, physically, and emotionally. Challenges will come, but keep pushing forward.”

For Garikai Dematsika, the journey is still unfolding, but the signs are clear — a player with talent, discipline, strong roots, and growing national attention.

With a famous football surname, rising performances at FC Platinum, praise from respected figures, and increasing Warriors debate, he is fast becoming one of the most interesting young midfield stories in Zimbabwean football.

At FC Platinum, he is no longer just a developing player — he is a rising name building his own identity while carrying a legacy forward.
